Hello all!
Crazy week this week! We have taught a lot of lessons this
week, mostly to less actives and recent converts. It's been great to get to
know them better, and to see the spirit working in all of their lives- whether
they are less active, investigating, or recent converts!
I guess I will begin with some crazy stories from the
week.
On Monday night, after P-day was over, we were trying to
find people to teach- potential investigators and referrals. We stopped by a
couple places, but no one would answer. We were about done for the night, it
was around 8:30 or so, and we were going to one last house- Mohammad's. We had
been street contacting anyone we could, but there aren't many people on the
street. We were on our way to this last house and we stop to talk to this man,
who was trying to move a toilet out of the way of his car. (un-contained
garbage pickup... hahahahha. I've seen several couches and chairs, but not a
toilet.) We were talking to him, and and he had a belief in Christ, had heard
about our church, and we gave him a Book of Mormon. He also said that he'd been
trying to meet with people from our church for a while, but kept missing calls
and stuff and felt super bad about it. Sister Pack asked him what his name
was...
His name was Mohammad!! He was the one we were trying to
visit, and the missed calls were from us! We got a return appointment, but we
have yet to met with him again. It was great- that was the second or third time
something awesome happened at around 8:30- someone answers their door, we meet
someone- right before it is time to get home. It was quite a fun experience,
and hopefully we will meet with him again soon.
Wednesday we had specialized training with all the new
missionaries. It was great to see them, and see how everyone's doing, and to
meet with the assistants and President and Sister Jeppson. We have been meeting
with them a lot! Normally, there isn't a zone conference, interviews, and
specialized training in the same transfer- but that's the way things
fell.
Wednesday also happened to be my turn to drive, so I got to
drive on the freeways and everything and get to Morristown. I realized
afterward that I basically just drove to Tacoma, with the length of the trip
and craziness of the roads. Driving to Tacoma would be easier- you don't have
to avoid potholes!
Friday brings another couple interesting stories. I slipped
and fell on the ice, and scratched my leg up, so that's been fun. Sister Pack
bandaged me up when we got home. I was almost more sad about the tights I
ruined than the cuts and scrapes I had. (also, I was glad my skirt was long
enough to cover it up, because it was a good couple hours before we got home-
we had a dinner appointment we still had to get to). We were on our way to a
less-active's home to visit with him when this happened, so the lesson was a
little weird at first because we couldn't stop laughing. We did explain to him
though what had happened, and we finished our doorstop lesson and headed back
to the car. We were almost to the car when we hear a shout from him, so we went
back and he gave us this big box of sausage. We aren't sure what to do with it,
so it's just been in our freezer. At least our car doesn't smell like sausage
anymore, haha.
Saturday was the time we almost ended up in New York. It was
also my driving day (we switch every day, skipping Thursdays because that is
our walking day). We were on our way to pick up a member for a lesson, and I
took the right exit, which was the last exit in NJ, and then took a wrong turn
and ended up on that same freeway we just left... AHHHHH! We were stressing out
big time! We did manage to find a way to turn around, so we didn't end up going
through the Lincoln Tunnel. Sister Pack wasn't sure how we were going to pay to
get through, because she didn't think we had any cash, and our TiWi goes crazy
if we leave mission boundaries, so she was getting ready to call the person in
charge of the cars, and President Jeppson- to say "we didn't mean it! we
took a wrong turn! We're coming back!" That was kinda crazy.
Also, explanation of the TiWi- it is a tracking system for
the car, it taps into the GPS and the car's computer. It yells at you if you go
too fast, or drive too aggressively, or leave mission boundaries. I'm slightly
haunted by the phrase "Check your speed" in a mechanical voice. All
of the mission cars have a TiWi installed. Fun Stuff. Anyway.
As far as the Superbowl goes- we did see fireworks on our
way home last night, probably around halftime. We didn't have any restrictions,
other than not going to the Superbowl and not getting involved in riots.
(That's all the Zone leaders said when we asked them, haha). We were a little
concerned about parking, since everyone had to park over here then go over the
bridge (whatever that means. I still have no idea where stuff is). Apparently,
the players drove through Secaucus every day to get to the stadium. Fun little
fact for you. As far as it being mentioned, it came up some- one of the recent
converts we work with had this big contract with the Superbowl to provide ice
cream and crepes (He owns an ice cream store! He's awesome.) for the event. He
has apparently been working on this since March. I'm sure the billboard
painter-people are getting a lot of work this week- a lot of billboards had
Superbowl ads on it. "It's a Jersey Thing" is what most of them said.
haha.
It is exciting that the Hawks won. Whoohoo!
Love Always,
Sister Richmond
